1. GENERIC SKILLS:
From the beginning of my studies within the college and university, I have been able to obtain communicational skills and the experience of diversity which was understood as a first point of contact. Through the completion of assessments, intermediate knowledge and skills have been obtained when using word document and PowerPoint presentation, including group work, high written and literacy skills, critical thinking, the ability to work independently, solving issues and language skills. These skills will allow me to successfully write any reports required within the corrective service industry.
2. SPECIALISED SKILLS:
Through the development of my criminological degree, I have gained several specialised skills that can be applied in the corrective services industry. The specialised skills that I have successfully obtained include, the conduction of interviews within policing, social research methods, an understanding of mental illness within the community, extensive knowledge on NSW legislation, prisons and punishment. With these learning abilities, I can successfully draft reports, produce therapy programs for incarcerated individuals and maintain a professional yet personal connection with particular individuals who suffer from mental illnesses or categorise themselves as disadvantaged.
3. COMMUNITY FUNDING APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT:
When relating to my capacity to conduct community needs analysis, an extensive amount of data collection and evaluation has been required. The engagement with the community and its stakeholders has been an important factor when funding the public grant. The skills that have been implemented to conduct a previous hypothetical community fund, has allowed me to implement basic approaches when restoring social issues within society. With extensive research into governmental and community bodies, I have been able to gain knowledge on the appropriate funders and donors that are suitable for the applicable scheme. This has equipped me with the ability to investigate possible funding bodies for the required task. These skills allowed me to implement further knowledge for the community proposal when referring to medical services in rural communities. It has grown my ability to conduct a needs analysis, develop a proposal and investigate funding bodies.
4. APPLIED DEBATING – DEVELOPING POSITION PAPERS:
When relating to my conceptual, substantive understanding of an applied debate, it is an argument presented before a judge or audience, who have the power to decide on the proposition of the argument. It is an academic piece that uses evidence to formulate a position. From the creation of my academic position paper, I have been able to successfully implement the structure of an applied debate into my major assessment within the unit of Contemporary Social Issues and Professional Practices. This has allowed me to develop my ability and skills as an instrument in an applied debate and can also be used for in my future career.
